Electricity & Heating
Within the research area of electricity and heating, EWI conducts economic analyses on future market developments as well as on fundamental issues concerning market design and regulation in Germany and Europe. In doing so, we extensively research the development of capacities, generation and prices, perform individual analyses on infrastructure projects or on the effects of political measures and address fundamental issues of future market design in the electricity and heating markets.
Within the research area of natural gas, EWI spends much of its time performing economic analyses of the gas market – globally as well as on the European and German level. In numerous studies, expert reports and research works, EWI investigates the European natural gas infrastructure, the role of natural gas in the future energy system, the economics of long-term gas supply contracts, European supply security and supply diversification as well as regulation issues.
Hard coal is the most important energy source in electricity production worldwide and it will continue to maintain its significance in the future, mainly due to the continuously growing energy demand of new industrial countries like China and India. For the foreseeable future, hard coal will also play an important role in Europe and Germany. As a result of numerous projects and research work, EWI has obtained and continues to possess in-depth knowledge of the coal market. Every year since 2011, EWI sends two colleagues to the International Energy Agency (IEA) for several months, where they contribute to the annual Medium-term Coal Market Report on-site in Paris.
