In its analysis “Expenditure on the electricity system in Germany – A discussion of historical developments,” the EWI examines the level, use, and distribution of expenditure on the electricity system between 2010 and 2024.
Since 2010, electricity system expenditure has risen above general inflation to 29.7 cent2024/kWh in 2024. The price-adjusted increase averaged 4.1% per year. The increase has been particularly pronounced since 2018, averaging 8.1% per year. Previously, the increase was 0.7% per year. The increase in expenditure is largely attributable to the electricity grid, which accounted for 26.4% of expenditure in 2024. With the public takeover of expenditure for the grid and expenditure under the Renewable Energy Sources Act (EEG) and the electricity price cap, a change in the financing regime is on the horizon, starting in 2021.
