Duration:

January 2019 until June 2021

The research project MODEX-POLINS is one of six model experiments in the thematic research network MODEX. In the experiment POLINS (“Politische Steuerungsinstrumente”, Engl.: Political Governance Instruments), the results of different energy or electricity market models are to be investigated and compared concerning selected political governance instruments. The goals of the project are:

  • Improve model quality and validity concerning future potential policy advice requirements.
  • Improved understanding of relationships between model properties and results
  • Further development of existing model approaches

EWI’s role in MODEX-POLINS

  • Modeling of three political control instruments in the energy system model DIMENSION:
    • Strategies for a national coal phase-out
    • Minimum CO2 price
    • Support measures for combined heat and power generation (CHP)
  • Detailed evaluation of model results of the different electricity and energy system models of the project partners using an adapted “difference-in-differences” approach to estimate causal effects
  • Preparation and provision of data for energy system modeling for the project partners
  • Identification of model specifics and their impact on the model results
  • Improvement and further development of DIMENSION
