EWI alumnus heads office of the Expert Council on Climate Issues

The Expert Council on Climate Issues has appointed Dr. Jakob Peter, a 2019 EWI doctoral candidate, as its secretary general. He will establish and manage the Council’s office in Berlin.

Jakob Peter has been appointed Secretary General of the Expert Council on Climate Issues (ERK) and Head of the Berlin office, which is currently being established, as of September 1, 2021.

Dr. Jakob Peter studied mechanical engineering at ETH Zurich and Chalmers University of Technology in Gothenburg. After his studies he worked for VOITH Hydro R&D Ocean Energies (Inverness, Heidenheim), myclimate Carbon Offsetting (Zurich), Climeworks (Zurich) and LaGeo (San Salvador). Subsequently, as a Fellow of the Mercator College of International Affairs, he worked as a consultant for Sustainable Investment Partners (Zurich), the German Federal Ministry for the Environment (Berlin), and the International Energy Agency (Paris). From 2014 to 2019, he was a consultant at ewi Energy Research & Scenarios gGmbH and a PhD student at the Institute of Energy Economics (EWI) at the University of Cologne.

In 2019, Jakob Peter was awarded a PhD in economics by the Faculty of Economics and Social Sciences at the University of Cologne for his dissertation “Essays on the Economics of Renewable Energy and Cross-Sectoral Decarbonization.” The essays contained in the dissertation were published in the internationally renowned journals The Energy Journal and Applied Energy. After his PhD at EWI, Jakob Peter worked as Senior Manager Energy Systems & Sector Coupling at ENERTRAG AG and in Strategy & Analysis at the startup CAPHENIA.
