Joint Workshop on Energy Economics by ewi and RWTH Aachen (FCN)
Current and topical research on energy economics will be presented by researchers from the ewi (University of Cologne) and the FCN (RWTH Aachen) in a joint workshop on October 13, 2017.
Additional funding awarded for 'Energy Transition and Climate Change' (ET-CC)
The interaction between the energy system and climate change is investigated by ewi-researchers in an interdisciplinary project together with meteorologists from the University of Cologne, the University of Bonn, partners from the Forschungszentrum Jülich and the Regional Computing Center at the University of Cologne. The first phase 2014-2017, and now its extension until 2018/19, are funded by the University of Cologne as an 'Emerging Group' within the 'Excellence Initiative' of the German Research Foundation (DFG Zukunftskonzept, ZUK 81/1).
New Director: Professor Dr. Wolfgang Ketter
With effect of February 1st, 2017, EWI has got a new director: We are delighted to welcome Professor Dr. Wolfgang Ketter as additional, third director at EWI! He is an absolute expert in the important field of digitalization and use of data. By his joining EWI will improve its research skills in the increasingly important area 'digitalization of the energy sector'.
UoC Forum Project
We completed the project 'Market design and regulation for stochastic electricity supply chains'. It was funded as a University of Cologne Forum in the framework of the Excellence Intitiative, and aimed at providing answers to relevant yet unresolved problems in the field of market design and regulation of stochastic electricity supply chains by bringing together specific energy market know-how and methods from supply chain management. Moreover, our activities deepened and extended energy-related research activities of the UoC with a sustainable and long term perspective.

IAEE Best Student Paper Award
Andreas Knaut and Frank Obermüller received the IAEE Best Student Paper Award at the 39th IAEE International Conference with their work on "How to Sell Renewable Electricity - Interactions of the Intraday and Day-ahead Market Under Uncertainty". They investigate the strategic bidding behavior of renewable producers in the sequential day-ahead and intraday market and find incentives for production withholding. The paper can be found here.
